Let’s face it. There are some hideous patterns floating around out there. And as you stand in the middle of your kitchen, contemplating the options, you choose to replace it yourself. Wonderful! The first step is what will you replace your old flooring with? With so many options today, linoleum, wood, ceramic tiles or vinyl tiles are all viable possibilities. Today’s project will require replacement with vinyl tiles. Many home repair centers sell these squares in boxes and individually. However, before you go, measure the size of your room. The service staff at these stores will happily figure out your square footage and tell you how many tiles you’re going to need.
Most of these stores will also allow you to return your leftovers and receive credit for them. But, you might consider keeping a few, just in case of damage or if a mistake is made along the way. These vinyl tiles also come in good, better and best quality. If this is a temporary measure until your home improvements are completely finished, go with the good tiles. If this is permanent, splurge and get the best quality tiles. They’re more expensive per box; however, in the long run they have the best survival rate and a better selection of patterns.Upon returning home, open up a box of tiles and lay them out on the floor.
Get a good idea of where you will start. If there are appliances in your way, you can either move them and replace the tile underneath it or leave it alone. Just remember that if you ever have to replace that appliance, it may be narrower than your existing item thereby showing the old tile. It would be best to do it now to keep consistency.By now a portion of your old linoleum may have started coming up, if not, find a corner and start pulling. Using a putty knife with a thin blade will allow you to chip and coax the old floor covering from its glue. As you are going along, occasionally stop and check out the floor underneath. If there is obvious damage from water or shrinkage, you will want to replace those pieces of plywood.

Rihanna stepped out for the annual Met Costume Institute Gala on Monday in a leather alligator print dress. While attending the event, she revealed that her fans will soon be able to dress like her, since she is designing her own clothing line.”I’m doing my own collection,” she told reporters on the red carpet. “I’m working on it — it will reflect my personal style.”Rihanna didn’t reveal when she plans on releasing her own line, but she is putting a lot of hard work into it. The “Where Have You Been” singer recently told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show that she wants people to “trust” her designs.
“I’m really pursuing a fashion line of my own. I want to design. This is also a road that I want to earn it. So I’m working with designers that I respect, and companies that I respect. I want people to really trust me before I just say, ‘Buy it, because it’s mine,’” she said. The 24-year-old has had a chance to reflect her style through fashion before. She previously collaborated with Emporio Armani for two small collections. She helped design a denim jumpsuit and biker jacket for the brand.
She even helped design the dress she wore to the Grammy Awards this year. What a neat story to localize, and what a springboard to other stories looking at apparel sales and alternatives to buying retail, like thrift stores, consignment retail, home sewing and other niche businesses. And with prom and wedding seasons looming, as well as the annual shift to summer wardrobes for many, now is not a bad time for a feature on clothing-related businesses.Plus, apparel-heavy Macy’s releases earnings on Wednesday.

Mr. Nick Dixon, Executive Director, ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands, said, “It’s been a spectacular journey since Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition first opened to the public on 29 October 2011. During the six month run, we’ve received numerous testimonials from visitors who mentioned their journey though the exhibition was both educational and emotional. RMS Titanic may have set sail over 100 years ago, but its story continues to resonate with visitors. I would like to thank Singapore for making this exhibition such a success. It’s not only the best showing for an exhibition at ArtScience Museum but also the most well-attended museum exhibition in Singapore.”
Currently, ArtScience Museum is hosting Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal which features over 260 paintings, drawings, sculptures, film, and video of the legendary artist’s works, marking the first time such an extensive collection is exhibited in Singapore. The exhibition will also be accompanied by a wide range of associated documents, interactive timelines, photographs, and archival material.Stepping into Titanic’s location in June is Harry Potter: The Exhibition which will showcase its grand collection of items in wonderfully detailed settings inspired by the film sets. As fans tour through the exhibition space, they will enjoy some of their favorite props and costumes from all the Harry Potter films, including Harry’s iconic wand and eyeglasses, Professor Snape’sTM original costume, the Golden SnitchTM and the Gryffindor school uniforms.
Boasting an iconic lotus-inspired design, the world’s first ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands is the premier venue for major international touring exhibitions from the most renowned collections in the world. ArtScience Museum presents exhibitions that give people a better understanding of how inspiration, creativity, and expression are born. Exhibitions held at ArtScience Museum include: Genghis Khan: The Exhibition; Traveling The Silk Road: Ancient Pathway To The Modern World.

Designer David Meister is a rock star when it comes to making dresses for the everyday woman. At nearly every store appearance, he’s greeted by working women, stay-at-home moms and ladies who lunch who share stories of how wonderful they feel wearing his dresses.”I love that,” Meister said during a recent visit at Saks Fifth Avenue in Houston. “The dress customer is really a Southern customer. I’m so grateful women in the South still love dresses. An Ohio native, Meister began his career at Danskin, the bodywear company, where he mastered stretch fabrication and uses the technique in his designs today. In 1998, he launched his own label with evening dresses, then with day dresses. Among his celebrity fans are Tina Fey, Diane Lane, Queen Latifah and Sharon Stone.
Why is Texas such a big market for you?Southern women love dresses. They love getting dressed up, and they change clothes for the event. What they wear to work, they aren’t wearing to dinner. Southern women still love dressing for the occasion. They are the best. How difficult is it to reinvent the dress each season?Actually, it’s easier because after you’ve done it for a while there are certain things you know don’t work, women don’t like and aren’t going to buy. For example, red cocktail dresses used to be important, but look around: You won’t see many in stores now. Women don’t want red dresses right now.If red is out, what’s the “it” color in dresses?Navy and black are always good. Metallics and neutrals are really big and shades of blue. But the dress customer tends to be a Southern customer, and she loves bright, happy color.
Are cocktail dresses still popular?Everything is cyclical. For a while, women were buying cocktail dresses. Now, gowns are doing better than cocktail dresses because women haven’t worn gowns in so long. Women are now buying way more gowns. What else have you been up to?We launched a signature collection for Bergdorf Goodman at a higher price point for evening based on the red-carpet dressing I’ve been doing. I’m doing fashion commentating on TV, which I love.Who is the most exciting celebrity to dress? For the red carpet recently, it’s Diane Lane. She’s a classically beautiful woman with an amazing body. We’ve done Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer a lot. But my all-time favorite is Sharon Stone. She’s smoking. When she puts on a dress, get out of the way.

Armed with scissors, pins and sewing machines, students in the Advanced Apparel Design Problems class transformed clothing they found at a Goodwill store into new and trendy outfits that will grace the runway along with their senior collections tomorrow at “Runway 2012: Defined.”The Fashion Network Association’s Spring 2012 fashion show not only gives students an opportunity to show off their work, but is also the culmination of a project created by three SF State professors who teamed up with Goodwill to promote sustainability.
Professors Connie Ulasewicz, of apparel merchandise and design, Hamid Khani, of broadcast and electronic communication arts, and Kathy O’Donnell, of marketing, wanted to find a community engagement that students from all of these areas could be involved with. Their goal was to promote the used-clothes recycler to a younger generation of college students. The marketing students conducted surveys to find out why students did or didn’t shop there. The people from broadcast and electronic communication arts turned that information into a visual, and those from ADM created window displays at two Goodwill stores with the outfits they made.
“These students are millennial students and have a better idea of what students and other people want, so they can help support the concept of Goodwill, so all of us together are making a difference,” Ulasewicz said. This was the first time that professor Adrian Leong had given this assignment to his design students, who work on their required senior fashion collection in his Advanced Apparel and Design Problems class. Each student was given a $15 voucher that they could spend at the Goodwill As-Is Store, which is where clothes from the other Bay Area Goodwill stores go after they have surpassed their shelf life of four weeks. The students were given 30 minutes to search through the large blue bins and racks of used clothes. Each piece sold for just a few dollars before the store was open to the general public.

Deputy Minister of Tourism Mohamed Maleeh Jamaal had claimed the Maldives tourism industry expects “phenomenal growth” in the Chinese market, following the conclusion of a travel roadshow representing the Maldives on a whistle-stop tour of five Chinese cities in one week. The main aims of the tour, according to Maleeh, were to build confidence in the Maldives as a destination as well as portray the country as an investment opportunity. The roadshow was also intended to update the Chinese industry on new tourism developments in the Maldives.
The tour was a joint enterprise with the Mega Maldives airline and took in all of its current Chinese flight destinations: Beijing, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, and Shanghai. The group also included travel agents, tour operators , and resort companies from the Maldives.China has become the market leader in terms of visitors to the country. Last year, the number of visitors from China surpassed those from Britain, reaching 198,000. The tour also aimed to publicise the industry’s aims to attract a record 1 million visitors this year.Recently released figures from the Ministry of Tourism show that total tourist numbers for the first quarter of 2012 were over a quarter of a million.
Overall arrivals for the first quarter of 2012 were up 3.3 percent compared with the figures for the same period in 2011. However, the same figures for the corresponding period in 2011 shown a 12.8 percent from 2010, suggesting a substantial slowdown in growth. After the political disruptions of this year, there were fears that the now vital Chinese market may have been unsettled. A combination of a quiet period in the Hong Kong tourism market, with the addition of the Maldives being placed by Hong Kong authorities on the country’s travel alerts, saw Mega Maldives cancel its chartered flights from this location on February 18.

The heart of every bride dances on her wedding day, and UK bridal design label Elizabeth Stuart has captured that feeling of euphoria by incorporating ballet’s grace into its latest collection of gowns.Having shown at White Gallery London’s 2011 New Talents’ Preview (see video below), Elizabeth Stuart’s ceremony silhouettes will once again appear in London’s White Gallery at an international bridal fair, which takes place May 20 – 22, 2012.
Strolling down the same catwalk as “I do” designs by more than 40 couture creators including Amanda Wakeley, Yolan Cris, Stephanie Allin and Johanna Hehir, Elizabeth Stuart’s latest Fall 2012 collection of bridal attire offers the ethereal essence of a ballerina, complete with smooth lines to accentuate a bride’s swan-like neck and fabric which plays with the light with each movement.White Gallery London will also provide a platform for the premiere viewing of Elizabeth Stuart’s White Label Collection– wedding wear for the refined bride which features clean lines sweetly softened by touches of lace.
Chu and Jenkins were joined by costume staffers Marlene Speranza and Leslie Maxson, described by Chu as the staff tailor and draper, respectively. Jenkins then took the floor to talk about what everyone was actually there for: the costumes of Downton Abbey. She pulled out two copies of what looked like a ragged, book-bound newspaper with miniscule type and expert drawings of extremely tall, turn-of-the-century-fashioned women. These were fashion magazines from around the era of the second season of Downton Abbey, around the beginning of World War I. The costumes in the show attempt to be true representations of how the wealthy “upstairs” people would have dressed at the time, Jenkins said.
